Expansion of the Moma Titanium Minerals Mine in Mozambique.

Kenmare Resources appointed Aveng Engineering to detail design, construct and commission the expansion of the Moma Titanium Minerals Mine on the north east coast of Mozambique. The Moma Mine contains deposits of heavy minerals which include the titanium minerals ilmenite and rutile, as well as the zirconium silicate mineral, zircon. Aveng Engineering on their turn appointed Greene Consulting Engineers for the civil- and structural engineering design and construction monitoring services on the expansion project.

WHAT GREENE DID

• We designed the super structure of a floating process plant, 7 storeys high with a plan area as large as a rugby field. The total mass of the empty plant is in the order of 5500 tonnes and the maximum design mass of the plant was taken as 10 500 tonnes.
• The plant was built on 15 steel pontoons connected by 8 m deep steel trusses (strong-backs) which ensure that the operating plant can float in a large man made pond.
• The steel structures of the super structure we designed consist of a spiral building, crane building, a supporting structure for the vibrating screen, the mooring towers and pipe bridges.

The project consists of constructing a 75MW solar facility with associated infrastructure.
Windfall 59 Properties (Pty) Ltd (the Owner) has been selected as a preferred bidder by the Department of Energy (DoE) pursuant to the Renewable Energy IPP Programme. Oakleaf Investment Holdings 86 (Pty) Ltd the main contractor appointed Aveng Engineering and Projects Company for the balance of plant works.

Aveng engineering approached GREENE Consulting Engineers to assist with the civil and structural aspects of the project.

WHAT GREENE DID

• GREENE assisted Aveng Engineering during the tender phase by compiling Technical Purchase Specifications, Engineering Document Requirements as well as Bills of Quantities for civil and structural works which were distributed to various contractors for tender purposes.
• GREENE assisted during construction by means of undertaking a multitude of quality inspections related to civil and structural works including the internal roads network, a control building, an access control building, storage and assembly building as well as the entire piling operation.
• GREENE provided field assistance by means of a site based Resident Engineer. By providing a Civil Resident Engineer GREENE ensured that the project is completed safely, at the required level of quality and within the allowed timeframe.
• Apart from conducting daily quality inspections GREENE was responsible for managing the civil, structural and piling contractor during the construction phase.

Maboneng, meaning ‘Place of Light’, is a privately developed urban neighbourhood on the east side of Johannesburg CBD.

Propertuity developers selected Daffonchio and Associates architects, Gooden & Huff architects, Adjaye Associates architects as well as Greene Consulting Engineers to develop existing dilapidated industrial buildings into retail spaces, restaurants, entertainment venues as well as loft apartments, offices, hotel, a museum and creative factory spaces, in other words a connected urban environment.

WHAT GREENE DID

• We investigated and assessed the existing buildings to determine how the structure can be altered to change the architect’s dream into a reality.
• We ensured that by using innovative, high quality, lightweight structural materials, the capacity of the existing buildings is not exceeded.
• Where new buildings needed to be developed, we provided practical solutions through functional designs.
